Online EMDR Therapy

Healing and Connection — Wherever You Are

Many people wonder if EMDR therapy can be effective when delivered online.

The short answer is: yes, it can — and often, it’s just as powerful as in-person sessions.

Online EMDR therapy allows you to experience deep healing in the comfort and privacy of your own space, without the stress of travel, parking, or waiting rooms.

All you need is a quiet, private environment, a stable internet connection, and a willingness to explore at your own pace.

How Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR reprocessing involves bilateral stimulation (BLS) — gentle rhythmic movements or sensations that help the brain process and integrate memories.

In online EMDR therapy, we adapt these same techniques for a Telehealth setting:

  • Eye movements: You follow a moving dot or our hand movements across your screen.
  • Tactile or auditory stimulation: You can use tapping, buzzers, or alternating tones via headphones.
  • Visual focus or gentle prompts: Some clients prefer tapping their own shoulders (“butterfly taps”) while guided through the process.

Everything is paced carefully to match your comfort level. You can pause at any time, ask questions, or ground between sets. Our calm, attuned presence helps you stay connected and supported throughout.

Research Evidence: Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?

Growing international research shows that online EMDR therapy is as effective as in-person EMDR for a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and performance blocks.

Studies from Europe, North America, and Australia have found:

  • Comparable reductions in PTSD symptoms between online and in-person EMDR sessions.
  • Strong client satisfaction and engagement, with many reporting feeling safer and more focused at home.
  • Improved accessibility for those in rural areas, those with mobility challenges, or those who feel more at ease in their personal environment.

The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and EMDR Europe both recognise online EMDR as evidence-based and clinically appropriate when conducted by trained therapists using secure Telehealth platforms.

What It Feels Like — and Why Clients Love Online EMDR Therapy

Many clients describe online EMDR therapy as surprisingly intimate, grounding, and convenient. Working from your own familiar space — perhaps with a soft blanket, a cup of tea, or a calming scent nearby — can help your nervous system stay regulated and open to healing.

Even through a screen, the sense of connection remains strong. Our steady pacing and clear guidance help you feel seen, supported, and safe throughout the process.

Clients often share that they love online EMDR because it offers:

  • Accessibility: Attend sessions from anywhere in Australia or abroad.
  • Comfort: Feel secure and relaxed in your own soothing environment.
  • Continuity: Maintain consistent therapy even while travelling or relocating.
  • Safety: Especially helpful for those healing from relational or complex trauma, allowing gradual exposure while staying grounded at home.

Online EMDR combines the emotional depth of in-person therapy with the comfort and flexibility of Telehealth — making it a powerful option for anyone seeking lasting change.

Setting Up for a Comfortable Online EMDR Session

To make the most of your online EMDR experience, consider preparing both technically and emotionally:

Technical setup

  • Use a laptop or tablet (rather than a phone) for a clearer view.
  • Ensure your internet connection is stable and your camera is at eye level.
  • Choose a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Use headphones for clearer sound and privacy.

Comfort setup

  • Have a glass of water or a warm drink nearby.
  • Keep a blanket, cushion, or grounding object within reach.
  • Adjust your lighting and seating so you feel cosy and safe.
  • Prepare a gentle plan for after your session — such as a quiet walk, journaling, music, or rest.

Emotional setup

  • Let people in your household know you’ll need privacy.
  • Choose a day and time where you can have a slower pace afterward.
  • Avoid scheduling demanding tasks immediately after reprocessing.
  • Give yourself permission to rest, hydrate, and be kind to your body and mind in the hours following.
