Is EMDR for Me?

A gentle guide to deciding whether EMDR therapy may be a fit

If you’re considering EMDR therapy, it’s common to feel unsure.

You might be curious but cautious, hopeful but hesitant, or wondering whether EMDR is “too much”, “too intense”, or even appropriate for what you’re dealing with. These questions are not a barrier to therapy. They’re often part of the process.

This page is designed to help you reflect gently on whether EMDR, including EMDR via Telehealth, may be right for you.

You Don’t Need to Be Certain

Many people begin EMDR therapy without feeling ready, confident, or sure.

In fact, clients often start EMDR while holding questions such as:

  • “What if it’s overwhelming?”
  • “What if I don’t remember things clearly?”
  • “What if I’m too sensitive or too controlled?”
  • “What if online therapy isn’t enough?”

EMDR therapy at HSCPS is not about pushing through these concerns. It’s about working with them.

EMDR With Us

EMDR may be helpful for you if…

EMDR therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck in patterns you intellectually understand but can’t shift
  • Experience strong emotional reactions that feel out of proportion
  • Carry anxiety, shame, or self-criticism that feels automatic
  • Have a history of relational, developmental, or complex trauma
  • Are a high-functioning professional who keeps going but feels worn down
  • Notice your body reacting before your mind catches up
  • Want a therapy that works beyond talking alone

Many of our telehealth EMDR clients describe feeling “fine on the outside” while internally managing a nervous system that never quite rests.

EMDR is not about forcing you to relive trauma

One of the biggest myths about EMDR is that it involves intense exposure or reliving painful memories.

That’s not how we practise EMDR at Holding Space Clinical Psychology Services.

Our approach is:

  • Gentle
  • Collaborative
  • Attachment- and parts-informed
  • Paced to your nervous system

At HSCPS, EMDR is delivered within a trauma-informed, attachment-aware framework, with emphasis on:

  • Preparation and stabilisation
  • Resourcing and grounding
  • Working with protective parts, not against them

For many clients, EMDR begins slowly and collaboratively, rather than moving straight into trauma processing.

You are always in control.

Preparation and resourcing come before any trauma processing.

What if I’m not “ready” yet?

Readiness is not a fixed state.

It’s something we build together.

EMDR can still be appropriate if:

  • You feel nervous but curious
  • Part of you wants help and part of you feels unsure
  • You’ve tried other therapies and felt stuck
  • You worry about being overwhelmed

In fact, these experiences often tell us EMDR needs to start slowly, not that it shouldn’t start at all.

Is online EMDR therapy effective?

Yes. Research and clinical experience show that EMDR can be effectively delivered via telehealth when done thoughtfully.

Online EMDR may suit you if you:

  • Prefer therapy from the comfort of home
  • Live regionally or have limited access to trauma-informed clinicians
  • Feel safer regulating emotions in your own space
  • Have a busy professional or caregiving schedule

We use secure telehealth platforms and adapt EMDR protocols specifically for online work.

When EMDR Might Not Be the Right Fit (Yet)

EMDR may not be the first step if:

  • You’re currently in acute crisis
  • You don’t yet have sufficient external support
  • Stabilisation and safety need to be prioritised

In these cases, therapy may focus initially on building coping strategies and support before EMDR is introduced.

This is not a failure or delay. It’s part of ethical, trauma-informed care.

A Gentle Way to Decide

You don’t need to decide everything now.  Choosing therapy is less about finding the “perfect” modality and more about finding a space where you feel safe enough to begin.

Many clients begin therapy feeling uncertain and allow clarity to emerge gradually through conversation and experience. Questions, hesitations, and mixed feelings are all welcome.

If EMDR feels like it might be right for you, you’re invited to explore your options at your own pace.

The next gentle step is simply to:

  • Ask questions
  • Share what’s bringing you here
  • Explore whether EMDR Telehealth feels like a good fit

From there, we’ll guide you with care and clarity.
