Online EMDR Therapy at Holding Space

Gentle, relational EMDR therapy delivered online

If you are considering online EMDR therapy, you may be wondering whether it can truly feel safe, supportive, and effective without being in the same room.

At Holding Space Clinical Psychology Services (HSCPS), online EMDR is not a compromise or a second-best option. It is a carefully designed way of working that prioritises felt safety, emotional presence, and clinical integrity, while allowing you to engage in trauma therapy from your own environment.

This page explains how EMDR is offered here, what makes it different, and who tends to benefit most from working with me online.

If you are looking for general information about EMDR, you may prefer to start at What Is EMDR Therapy?
If you are unsure whether EMDR is right for you, you can also explore Is EMDR for Me?.

What Is Online EMDR at Holding Space?

Online EMDR at Holding Space is trauma-informed, attachment-aware, and carefully paced psychotherapy, delivered via secure Telehealth.

Sessions are conducted one-to-one with Yvonne, a Canberra-based clinical psychologist, and are available to adults across Australia.

Rather than applying EMDR as a rigid protocol, the work here is:

  • Relational and collaborative
  • Parts-informed and attachment-aware
  • Grounded in nervous system regulation
  • Responsive to readiness, pacing, and consent

For many clients, being in their own space during EMDR actually increases safety. You are not required to manage the stress of travel, unfamiliar environments, or abrupt transitions after sessions. Instead, therapy unfolds where your nervous system already knows how to settle.

Who Online EMDR Therapy Is For

Online EMDR therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Prefer to attend therapy from your own space
  • Live outside Canberra or have limited access to trauma-informed services locally
  • Feel more regulated and grounded in familiar surroundings
  • Are balancing work, caregiving, health, or energy limitations
  • Want continuity of care when travel or relocation is a factor

Telehealth EMDR is commonly used by clients across Australia, including professionals, parents, and individuals working through trauma, anxiety, and long-standing emotional patterns.

Can EMDR Really Work Online?

Yes. Research and clinical experience consistently show that EMDR can be effective when delivered via Telehealth, provided it is offered with care, preparation, and attention to safety.

At HSCPS, effectiveness does not rely on eye movements alone. It rests on:

  • The quality of therapeutic presence
  • The clarity of preparation and resourcing
  • The ability to notice and respond to subtle shifts in the nervous system
  • Flexibility in how bilateral stimulation is used

The focus is not on pushing through memories, but on supporting the brain and body to process at a pace that feels tolerable and contained.

Emotional Presence in Online Therapy

A common concern about Telehealth is whether therapy can feel emotionally present.

At Holding Space, emotional presence is treated as a clinical priority.

Online sessions are structured to include:

  • Clear orientation and grounding
  • Slower pacing and frequent check-ins
  • Careful attention to tone, rhythm, and relational cues
  • Space for uncertainty, ambivalence, and “not knowing yet”

You are not expected to push yourself or revisit distressing material prematurely. Therapy unfolds at a pace your system can tolerate. Therapy here is designed to feel held, even through a screen.

Many clients report that online sessions feel unexpectedly intimate and focused, without the pressure to “hold it together” once the session ends.

What Makes Online EMDR Feel Safe and Contained

A key concern for many people considering Telehealth EMDR is safety. Online EMDR therapy at Holding Space is designed with this in mind.

Safety is supported through:

  • Assessing readiness for EMDR
  • Building internal and external resources
  • Learning grounding and regulation strategies
  • Establishing clear stop signals and consent processes

If overwhelm, dissociation, or protective responses arise, they are met with curiosity and care rather than pressure. You are not expected to manage distress on your own. Therapy remains relational and supported throughout.

How Online EMDR Is Different at Holding Space

Online EMDR at HSCPS is:

  • Attachment-informed
  • Parts-aware and IFS-informed
  • Somatically attuned

Telehealth clients also receive access to The Holding Space Library, a private online resource space designed to support you between sessions.

Rather than focusing solely on desensitisation, the emphasis is on integration and meaning-making.

This means:

  • Protectors are respected, not overridden
  • Avoidance is understood as meaningful
  • Symptoms are approached as signals, not problems to eliminate

This approach often suits people who:

  • Feel high-functioning but internally overwhelmed
  • Have a history of complex or relational trauma
  • Want therapy that is gentle, collaborative, and paced

This style of EMDR often suits people who have tried therapy before but found it too fast, too cognitive, or too activating.

Practicalities of Online EMDR at Holding Space

Practical Considerations for Telehealth EMDR

Online EMDR therapy requires a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device that allows clear visual and audio contact.

After booking, clients receive guidance to help set up a comfortable and supportive Telehealth environment. Additional resources may also be provided to support preparation and integration.

Who I Work Best With

Online EMDR at Holding Space tends to work particularly well for adults who:

  • Have experienced trauma, complex trauma, or attachment wounds
  • Feel burnt out, anxious, emotionally disconnected, or stuck
  • Are professionals, caregivers, or parents under sustained pressure
  • Value a thoughtful, relational therapeutic style
  • Want EMDR that respects protectors and readiness

You do not need to be certain that EMDR is right for you. We can explore this together before beginning any processing work.
