EMDR With Us

How EMDR is practised at Holding Space Clinical Psychology Services

EMDR therapy can look very different depending on where and how it is offered.

At Holding Space Clinical Psychology Services (HSCPS), EMDR is practised as a relational, trauma-informed psychotherapy, not a standalone technique. It is integrated with attachment awareness, parts-based understanding, and nervous system regulation, so that change happens in a way that feels safe, meaningful, and sustainable with care, precision, and deep respect for your pace, your parts, and your lived experience.

This page explains our approach to EMDR, how it is woven into therapy at HSCPS, and what you can expect when working with us.

If you are specifically interested in Telehealth, you may wish to visit Online EMDR Therapy at Holding Space.

Our approach to EMDR: gentle, relational, and nervous-system informed

EMDR can look very different depending on how it’s practised. At HSCPS, EMDR is not rushed and not imposed.

We understand symptoms, avoidance, and ambivalence as protective responses, not barriers to therapy. EMDR is offered only when your system is ready, and always with your consent.

Our approach is:

  • Attachment-informed
  • Parts-informed (IFS-aligned)
  • Trauma- and dissociation-aware
  • Designed for complex and developmental trauma
  • Adapted specifically for Telehealth

This means EMDR is used within a broader therapeutic relationship, rather than as a protocol applied in isolation.

This means we focus first on safety, stabilisation, and collaboration. You are never pushed faster than your system is ready to go into memory processing.

You can learn more about how EMDR works here: What Is EMDR?

EMDR as a Collaborative Process

EMDR at Holding Space is collaborative and transparent.

You are never expected to:

  • Relive memories in detail
  • Push past discomfort
  • “Get it right” or perform in therapy

Instead, sessions involve:

  • Ongoing check-ins
  • Shared decision-making
  • Flexibility in pacing and focus

We move with your nervous system, not ahead of it.

For an overview of the early stages of EMDR, see Your First EMDR Session.

Preparation and Safety Come First

Effective EMDR depends on preparation.

Before any memory processing begins, therapy focuses on:

  • Understanding your nervous system responses
  • Building internal and external resources
  • Developing grounding and stabilisation strategies
  • Establishing clear boundaries and stop signals

This foundation supports safety during and between sessions, whether therapy is delivered in person or online.

You can read more about what supports good outcomes at What Helps EMDR Work Best.

Integrating EMDR With Ongoing Therapy

At HSCPS, EMDR is not treated as a “one-off intervention”.

It is integrated into ongoing therapy, allowing space for:

  • Reflection and meaning-making
  • Working with protective parts
  • Addressing attachment patterns and relational themes

This approach often suits people who:

  • Have tried therapy before without lasting change
  • Feel overwhelmed by fast or directive approaches
  • Want depth as well as symptom relief

If you are unsure whether EMDR is right for you, Is EMDR for Me? may help clarify fit.

EMDR designed for functioning adults

Many of our clients are:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Therapists
  • Corporate or academic professionals
  • Caregivers and parents
  • High-achieving individuals who are “coping” but exhausted

They often say:

  • “I’ve done years of talking therapy”
  • “I understand my patterns but still feel stuck”
  • “I hold it together for everyone else”
  • “My body reacts even when my mind knows better”

Our EMDR work is designed for people who are outwardly functional but inwardly carrying a heavy load.

Rather than working against protective responses, therapy involves:

  • Listening to what different parts need
  • Respecting hesitation or ambivalence
  • Building internal safety before trauma processing

This approach helps EMDR feel more contained and respectful, particularly for clients who have learned to cope by staying in control or minimising their needs.

What makes our EMDR work different

1. We prioritise safety over speed

Faster is not better in trauma therapy. Effective EMDR depends on nervous system readiness.

We spend time building:

  • Internal resources
  • Emotional regulation capacity
  • Trust in the therapeutic relationship

This creates more sustainable change and fewer overwhelm responses.

2. We work with parts, not against them

If part of you wants healing and another part feels scared, resistant, or sceptical, we welcome that.

We integrate parts-informed EMDR, which means:

  • Protective parts are respected
  • Resistance is understood as wisdom
  • No part of you is forced aside

This is especially important for complex trauma and attachment wounds.

3. We are experienced with complexity

EMDR is not only for single-incident trauma.

We regularly work with:

  • Complex PTSD
  • Developmental and relational trauma
  • Childhood emotional neglect
  • Attachment trauma
  • Shame, self-criticism, and relational patterns
  • Burnout and secondary trauma in professionals

Care is taken to tailor EMDR to your unique history and nervous system.

What EMDR therapy with us is not

  • Not rushed
  • Not one-size-fits-all
  • Not exposure-based
  • Not focused on “pushing through”
  • Not disconnected from your lived relationships

If you’re looking for a therapist who will “just do EMDR quickly”, we may not be the right fit.

If you’re looking for depth, safety, and attunement, you’re in the right place.

What working together looks like

  1. Initial sessions focus on understanding your history, goals, and nervous system patterns
  2. Preparation and resourcing build safety and stability
  3. EMDR processing unfolds at a pace your system can integrate
  4. Ongoing integration supports real-life change

Is this the right next step for you?

If you’re seeking trauma therapy that is:

  • Thoughtful
  • Evidence-based
  • Emotionally safe
  • Delivered online

We would be honoured to work with you.

You don’t need to be certain. You don’t need to be “ready enough”.

If something here resonates, that’s enough to start a conversation.

Online EMDR is not a compromise. For many clients, it’s an advantage.

Telehealth allows you to:

  • Stay in your own regulated environment
  • Access specialist trauma care regardless of location
  • Reduce the emotional cost of travel and transitions
  • Integrate sessions more gently into daily life

At Holding Space, we intentionally adapt EMDR protocols for online delivery, including bilateral stimulation methods that work effectively via Telehealth.
