As every therapist will tell you, healing involves discomfort. But so does refusing to heal. And over time, refusing to heal is always more painful.

Therapy with Us

At Holding Space, therapy is based primarily on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), integrated with Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment-informed, and somatic approaches.

This means we work not only on reducing symptoms, but also on gently understanding and healing the deeper patterns that have been shaped by past experiences.

To get a sense of what EMDR therapy looks like, we encourage you to explore the EMDR hub and its related pages, including:

  • What is EMDR?
  • How EMDR works
  • Is online EMDR effective?
  • What EMDR can help with
  • Preparing for EMDR sessions

These pages will give you a feel for the process and help you decide if this approach resonates with you.

What to Expect in Our First Session

What to Expect in Our First Session

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and explore what brings you here.

We’ll talk about your goals, current challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy.

There’s no pressure to share everything right away — we’ll move at your pace.

In this early stage, we often:

  • Explore what’s been happening recently and what feels most important to focus on
  • Begin building emotional safety and stabilisation skills (such as grounding or your calm place)
  • Discuss how EMDR and IFS might be integrated to support your needs

Our intention is for you to leave feeling seen, understood, and with a sense of clarity about how we’ll work together.
